MEDIA NOTES

          TV MONITOR: Last night's 10:00pm ET edition of FSN's
     "Fox Sports News" (30 minutes due to college basketball) and
     the 11:00pm ET edition of CNN/SI's "Sports Tonight" both led
     with a report that Dan Marino will announce his retirement
     next week, followed by Univ. of Cincinnati C Kenyon Martin
     breaking his leg.  "Fox Sports News" had 8:58 of men's
     college basketball coverage and "Sports Tonight" had 5:51. 
     Last night's 11:30pm ET edition of ESPN's "SportsCenter" led
     with an update of the Stanford Univ.-Univ. of AZ men's
     college basketball game, followed by a report on the Univ.
     of St. Louis -Univ. of Cincinnati men's college basketball
     game.  In total, "SportsCenter" had 20:36 of men's college
     basketball coverage (THE DAILY). 
          WHO IS KAISER SOSA? In N.Y., Celia McGee writes that
     the June 1 opening reception for BookExpo, the publishing
     industry's annual trade show and convention, "will showcase
     well-known author" Sammy Sosa, who has written his new book,
     "Sosa: An Autobiography" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 3/10).
          EYE ON SPORTS: GOLF WORLD's Michael Arkush writes that
     "if any more" of CBS' golf tournaments finish on Monday,
     they will be carried on TNN.  Arkush: "Of course, if [Tiger]
     Woods is in the midst of another extended winning streak,
     all bets are off. Stay tuned" (GOLF WEEK, 3/10 issue).
     ...DAILY VARIETY's Pursell & Dempsey report that the WWF
     "has served notice it intends to cancel its contract" with
     USA for its wrestling shows.  The WWF is eyeing a broadcast
     and cable outlet to air both wrestling and the XFL, and
     Viacom/CBS "is in the driver's seat" (DAILY VARIETY, 3/10).
          OTHER NOTES: MLB and the N.Y. Daily News will launch
     "Major League Baseball en espanol," a new Spanish/English
     baseball publication that will be inserted into newspapers
     that have a high Latino readership.  The four-color
     publication will debut on March 19 in seven U.S. markets in
     conjunction with MLB's "Month of the Americas" (MLB)...PC
     WEEK LABS' Henry Baltazar writes on the  Advanced Scout
     computer software utilized by NBA coaches and calls it a
     "relatively simple yet powerful tool that allows coaches to
     make intelligent data queries anywhere without having a
     statistician or database expert in tow."  Visual Gold Inc.
     controls the application, which was developed at IBM (PC
     WEEK LABS, 3/6 issue)....Chek.com has teamed up with the
     Phillies to offer free, Web-based e-mail on the team's
     official Web site, www.phillies.com (Chek.com).
