AN ISC RACE TRACK IN NJ? BUT WILL IT HAVE AN EXIT?

Int'l Speedway Corp. (ISC) reached an agreement with
the NJ Sports & Exposition Authority (NJSEA) to conduct a
feasibility study on the possible development of a
motorsports facility at the Meadowlands (ISC). In Daytona
Beach, Godwin Kelly wrote that "potential sites" for the new
facility include NY, NJ and CT. ISC Exec VP Lesa France
Kennedy, on the Meadowlands location: "It captures the major
Metropolitan New York area. It offers the backdrop of the
New York skyline, which has a lot of appeal to us."
Kennedy: "We'll be spending the next year trying to define
this project" (DAYTONA BEACH NEWS-JOURNAL, 1/15). In NJ,
George Jordan reported that ISC "will evaluate" the
Meadowlands over the next year "to determine if the area is
suitable for a track" that could seat up to 200,000 fans.
The study will include traffic, parking, engineering and
environmental impact. NJSEA spokesperson John Samerjan said
that the ISC deal "blocks access" to the Meadowlands by
ISC's "chief competitor," Speedway Motorsports, which is
also looking at a NY/NJ track. Samerjan: "No one else will
be engaged while ISC is doing it. It's going to be an
     extensive study" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 1/15).
