NEW VANCOUVER WTA EVENT OFF; SEATTLE LPGA STOP NEEDS SPONSOR

Tennis Canada said Thursday that a WTA Tour event
planned for Vancouver in August is "off due to lack of
sufficient sponsorship support," according to Lyndon Little
of the VANCOUVER SUN. The proposed Tier Three event
offering a minimum of US$170,000 in prize money was to have
been played August 5-13. Last year, Tennis Canada President
Bob Moffatt said that the event would need a budget of about
C$700,000-800,000 and that "about half of that would need to
come from corporate sponsorships." Tennis Canada Dir of
Communications Steve McAllister: "It wasn't a case where
people aren't interested in sponsoring tennis. I think it's
just a combination of timing and being hard to get
commitments on a tight deadline" (VANCOUVER SUN, 1/14).
LPGA STOP STILL SEEKING SPONSOR: In Seattle, Craig
Smith wrote that the search continues for a sponsor to "keep
an LPGA Tour stop alive in the Seattle area, but unless one
is found within a month, the focus will shift to finding one
for 2001" (See THE DAILY, 10/7) (SEATTLE TIMES, 1/14).
