FORMER ST. JOHN'S SOCCER COACH NAMES NIKE, SCHOOL IN LAWSUIT

Former St. John's Univ. assistant soccer coach James
Keady is "filing a federal lawsuit" in U.S. District Court
in N.Y. claiming Nike and the university "conspired to
violate his civil rights," according to William McCall of
the AP. Keady said that he was "forced to quit because he
refused to wear" Nike sporting goods. His attorney Joel
Joseph said that the lawsuit also claims that Nike
"conspired to damage Keady's reputation and breached his
contract as a graduate assistant employed by the
university." McCall wrote that St. John's "reacted to
pressure from Nike" after Keady "began criticizing" the
school's Nike deal "worth millions of a dollars at a time
when workers at overseas Nike factories were being paid less
than a dollar an hour." Nike Dir of Global Issues
Management Vada Manager said the lawsuit is "completely
without merit and we will defend it vigorously" (AP, 11/17).
