Opponents of the proposed Coyotes arena complex at Los
Arcos Mall "are asking a judge to toss out about 16,000
early ballots" for the November 2 arena vote in three AZ
cities, according to Alexa Haussler of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC.
The opponents are "accusing" the city of Scottsdale and the
Los Arcos Stadium District Board "of failing to tell voters
that the city is required to match voter-approved state
subsidies for the" $585M project. The ballot "refers only
to the state sales tax," which would amount to about $100M
over 10 years. Coyotes President Shawn Hunter: "It's a
monster publicity stunt, and it's one of the biggest
demonstrations of arrogance I've ever seen. They obviously
must be concerned about their position." The complaint
states that the city mailed out ballot language and
publicity pamphlets to registered voters that "are
deceptive, misleading, and inconsistent with governing
statutory requirements" and asks for new pamphlets to be
printed and votes already cast to be thrown out. In May,
Scottsdale voters approved the formation of a stadium
district for the arena and will now vote on the financing
package on November 2 (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 10/20).
