A TV KO FOR TVKO: RECORD BUYS FOR DE LA HOYA-TRINIDAD BOUT

Saturday night's Oscar De La Hoya-Felix Trinidad bout
"generated the most" PPV buys ever for a non-heavyweight
bout, according to Scott Hettrick of the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.
The fight also generated "the most revenue for any fight in
the history" of TVKO and the "third-most revenue for any PPV
event," trailing only the two Mike Tyson-Evander Holyfield
fights. TVKO reported 1.25 million PPV buys at the
"unprecedented rate" of $49.95, translating into "more than"
$62M in retail revenue. The total "smashes the previous
welterweight PPV record" of 800,000 buys and $34M in revenue
for the De La Hoya-Pernell Whitaker bout in '97 (HOLLYWOOD
REPORTER, 9/22). GOULD MEDIA'S TV SPORTSFILE noted the
total buys "bested" the March '99 Evander Holyfield-Lennox
Lewis fight by 150,000 buys (GOULD MEDIA, 9/21). HBO/TVKO
Senior VP/Programming Lou DiBella: "The numbers this fight
did were astronomical. ... It's unfortunate that the fight
itself wasn't extraordinary, but these are unheard-of type
     numbers" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 9/22).
