NAMES IN THE NEWS

          The "goal" of 76ers President PAT CROCE since "having
     his leg shattered in 10 places" in a motorcycle accident
     June 17, "has been to walk without the aid of crutches or a
     cane" by November 2, when his team opens its NBA season. 
     Croce, who "understands" amputation is a "way distant"
     possibility, on reaching his goal: "I still say it's
     possible, but the odds are getting a little further against
     me.  The season is six weeks away and I have no bone growth
     yet" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 9/22)....MICHAEL JORDAN
     graces the cover of the current ESPN MAGAZINE, as Gene
     Wojciechowski reports on JORDAN'S FLIGHT SCHOOL in Las
     Vegas, which costs $15,000 to attend (ESPN Magazine).
     ....DAILY VARIETY's Michael Fleming wrote that agent LEIGH
     STEINBERG "has become Hollywood's go-to guy on jock fare." 
     Steinberg gets paid "about" $50,000 a picture to serve as a
     consultant and worked on "FOR LOVE OF THE GAME" and "ANY
     GIVEN SUNDAY" (DAILY VARIETY, 9/21)....ESPN's 11:00pm ET
     edition of "SportsCenter" gave viewers the chance to select
     the "hottest couple in sports" by logging on to ESPN.com and
     voting.  The results were revealed at the end of the show
     and the top six choices were (57,995 votes): SERGEI
     FEDOROV/ANNA KOURNIKOVA (61.9%), ANDRE AGASSI/STEFFI GRAF
     (21.2%), BRADY ANDERSON/AMANDA COETZER (6.6%), ROBERTO
     ALOMAR/MARY PIERCE (5.2%), RAY KNIGHT/NANCY LOPEZ (3.4%) and
     TOM ROUEN/AMY VAN DYKEN (1.3%) (ESPN, 9/21).
