NAMES IN THE NEWS

          Charges against Cowboys Owner JERRY JONES have been
     changed from "fleeing or attempting to elude police" to
     "interfering with the duties of an officer," following a
     review of the case.  Meanwhile, NFL VP/Communications GREG
     AIELLO said that the league would "have no comment on Jones'
     arrest" and "declined to respond when asked whether the NFL
     office had a procedure in place to review any club owner or
     official who is arrested" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 8/31).  In
     Ft. Worth, Randy Galloway, on Jones: "Jones may have
     upgraded the team image by insisting nothing delay his visit
     to a place of worship" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 8/31). 
          MORE NAMES: NBC's Joe Garagiola profiled Yankees
     radio/TV announcer SUZYN WALDMAN on the "Today" show and
     called her a "broadcasting pioneer" who is now "part of the
     fabric" of the Yankees.  NBC's Matt Lauer, on Waldman: "When
     you listen to her broadcasts you do get a sense that you're
     hearing a story from a member of their family. ... Thank
     goodness that sports has opened its doors to more women"

     LUSTGARTEN passed away Monday morning after battling cancer. 
     Lustgarten was 52 (Mult., 8/31)....China national soccer
     team player SUN WEN signed last week with CA-based
     Globalsports Management Group's GARETT HOSHIJO (BRIDGE NEWS,
     8/30)....Nuggets/Avalanche/Pepsi Center Owner DONALD STURM
     and a CA partner have paid "about" $23.25M for a 165,000-
     square-foot building in Denver occupied by the Bank of
     Cherry Creek and the Land Title Guaranty Co. (DENVER POST,
     8/31)....Mandalay Entertainment's PETER GUBER is profiled by
     VARIETY's Charles Lyons and Guber discusses Mandalay Sports'
     plans for minor league baseball in Dayton, OH, and a new
     relationship with WCW (VARIETY, 8/23 issue).
