PACKERS LEANING TOWARD RENOVATING HISTORIC LAMBEAU FIELD

Packers President Bob Harlan "gave the strongest
indication yet that the much-preferred option" is to
renovate 42-year-old Lambeau Field, according to Gary
D'Amato of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, who notes that if
Harlan "gets his wish," the field will be renovated "in
phases" between seasons "in a way that would allow the
stadium to retain its intimacy and charm." Harlan: "I would
love to find a way to save the stadium." Harlan adds the
Packers "will need some public help," with construction
"ideally" beginning in 2001 and being completed by 2003.
D'Amato reports that a renovation of Lambeau Field "would
consist of" adding four or five rows of seats around the top
of the bowl, increasing seating capacity by 5,000 or 6,000
to 66,000 or 67,000, rebuilding luxury boxes, adding a
stadium club that "could be used year-round," and building a
new, wider concourse that would include retail shops, more
concession stands and restrooms (JOURNAL SENTINEL, 8/27).
