LICENSED TO ILITCH: OWNER GETTING MORE INVOLVED WITH TIGERS

Red Wings/Tigers Owner Mike Ilitch is devoting "more
energy, more drive, more time" to the Tigers, and with the
April opening of Comerica Park, he is also "getting more
directly involved in club matters, including player moves,"
according to John Lowe of the DETROIT FREE PRESS. Ilitch:
"I think we will have the most exciting stadium in the
country. I want everyone who comes there to have an
     exciting time. ... We're going into a $300-million stadium.
     It's a big-time situation. I'm responsible for getting the
park opened and for having a good team." Lowe writes that
turning a profit also "appears to be a higher priority than
ever" for Ilitch, who said that "in some years he has lost"
$20M on the Tigers. Ilitch, on his role: "I just want to
win. I don't have a big ego" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 7/23).
