CAPPIELLO LEAVES THE SPORTS AUTHORITY AFTER SHORT RUN

The Sports Authority announced that the company and
President & CMO WILLIAM CAPPIELLO have mutually agreed to
sever their employment relationship. TSA CEO MARTIN HANAKA
will oversee the merchandising, marketing and logistics
functions until a replacement is named. TSA COO JAMES TENER
will be responsible for the sales and service function while
a search for a new CMO is underway (TSA). Cappiello is
"leaving seven months after he arrived to help lead a
turnaround effort." TSA CFO ANTHONY CRUDELE said that
Hanaka "was unhappy with performance in recent months and
decided progress would be swifter if he took direct charge
of an effort to 'build a reputation of having that everyday
low price.'" Crudele said that TSA "believes it has lost
sales to discount stores partly because it hasn't done
enough to persuade customers that they can find bargains at"
the company's stores (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/15).
