X MARKS THE SPOT THUS FAR FOR EXTREME SPORTS FANS

More than 48,000 fans attended the "main site" of the X
Games Saturday in S.F., according to Sal Ruibal of USA
TODAY, who wrote that the S.F. Police Department "estimated"
that 15,000 fans "had to wait outside the venue" (USA TODAY,
6/28). Ruibal also writes that the X Games "have proved to
be fertile ground" for digital coverage, as 70 of the 168
credentialed media outlets are Internet sites. ESPN.com "is
asking" viewers to send in their own extreme sports photos
via the Internet for a "televised tribute" to X Games fans
on July 4. ESPN Coordinating Producer Jamie Reynolds:
"We're trying to create a global clubhouse. We're not just
TV; we're content providers across the board" (USA TODAY,
6/28). In Phoenix, Craig Morgan wrote that 15 sponsors paid
ESPN a total of $22M for multimedia ad packages, including
commercials, online advertising and signage at the games.
Morgan added that six primary sponsors paid $2M each while
the rest paid about $1M each (AZ REPUBLIC, 6/27).
