MEDIA NOTES

TV MONITOR: Last night's 11:00pm ET edition of CNN/SI's
"Sports Tonight" led with an update on Astros manager Larry
Dierker's condition followed by Red Sox-Orioles. FSN's "Fox
Sports News Primetime" (Fox Sports Net South) led with
Yankees-Devil Rays followed by Red Sox-Orioles. There was
no 11:00pm or 1:00am edition of "SportsCenter" due to MLB on
ESPN and the Women's World Cup on ESPN2 (THE DAILY).
ASKING FOR A DO-OVER? The WALL STREET JOURNAL's David
Sweet noted that on Saturday during Game Six of the Stanley
Cup Finals, the "only mention of hockey" on The Sporting
News Online (TSN Online) "was a link to Stanley Cup previews
for Dallas and Buffalo," while both CNNSI.com and CBS
SportsLine had lead stories on the game. Sweet: "Could one
of sport's most vaunted championships have been forgotten?"
TSN Online GM Mark Newman, whose site chose to lead with
U.S. Open news instead: "We felt there was enough interest
in the U.S. Open to carry over in that space from the third
to the final round. [But] if we had a do-over, I'd tell the
editors involved that we should have been totally hockey-
driven in that space at that time" (WS JOURNAL, 6/22).
MORE NOTES: In Toronto, William Houston cites sources
as saying ESPN hockey announcer Gary Thorne "will call" NHL
games for ABC Sports "next season," while Fox Sports NHL
analyst John Davidson "is slotted to be a studio analyst."
Insiders also say ABC Sports announcer Al Michaels "is a
long shot for the NHL play-by-play job" (GLOBE & MAIL,
6/24)....In Chicago, Larry Hamel, on the "embarrassing
showing" of super middleweight boxer Tom Younan vs. Robert
West on "ESPN2 Friday Night Fights": "It's one thing for a
seemingly good match not to pan out. It's another to
present fights that look bad on paper, and ESPN2 frequently
has been guilty of doing just that" (SUN-TIMES, 6/24).
...Mike Fratello told Jim Rome that he would like to coach
again, but added, "In the meantime, it would be great to
pursue that TV career once again" ("Last Word," 6/23).
