OLYMPIC NOTES

SAMARANCH-POUND FEUD? IOC President Juan Antonio
Samaranch "refuted suggestions of a rift" with IOC VP Dick
Pound. Samaranch: "He has my full confidence. I respect him
very much." Samaranch also "moved to dispel rumors" of an
internal coup against him and "reiterated that he intends to
complete" the final two years of his term. Samaranch: "I am
not leaving. I will stay until 2001 if I am healthy enough."
(Stephen Wilson, AP, 6/16)....In Toronto, James Christie
writes that it "may come back to haunt" Pound "that he was a
strident defender" of Phil Coles (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/16). A
DESERET NEWS editorial criticizes the IOC for allowing Coles
to remain on the committee, "The IOC, the body that oversees
the Olympics on a grand scale, doesn't get it. This apparent
lack of accountability is troubling" (DESERET NEWS, 6/15).
