EXPOS CFO CARPENTIER RESIGNS IN MIDST OF TEAM RESTRUCTURING

The resignation of Expos CFO Laurier Carpentier "has
created concerns that time is running out on an attempt by
the team's ownership consortium to restructure itself,"
according to Jeff Blair of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL.
However, Carpentier, who has been supervising the proposed
revival of the downtown ballpark plan, cautioned Monday
against "reading too much into my decision." The team's
ownership consortium has recently made attempts to extend
the March 7 deadline for having a refinancing plan in place,
but a source close to MLB's Commissioner's Office
"indicated" that MLB "would probably not extend any deadline
beyond May" because of a June deadline for the MLBPA to set
the 2000 schedule. Carpentier will stay on with the team
until the end of March (GLOBE & MAIL, 1/26). In Montreal,
Stephanie Myles writes that "the timing couldn't be worse"
for Carpentier's resignation since he "essentially became
the liaison between" outgoing Expos President Claude Brochu
and the team's ownership group (Montreal GAZETTE, 1/26).
