NAMES IN THE NEWS

          JEFF GORDON appears on ABC's "Spin City" tonight at
     9:00pm (THE DAILY)....Brazilian soccer star RONALDO was at
     the UN yesterday to back a campaign aimed at increasing AIDS
     awareness among young people (AP, 11/17)....PBA Founder
     EDDIE ELIAS died in Naples, FL, Sunday from complications
     associated with pneumonia.  In his appreciation, Terry Pluto
     wrote, "By marrying TV and corporate sponsors to his bowling
     tournaments, he put the PBA on the sporting map" (AKRON
     BEACON JOURNAL, 11/17)....BARRON'S Bill Alpert reviews
     Blazers/Seahawks Owner PAUL ALLEN's financial portfolio and
     that Microsoft "probably remains" Allen's "best-performing
     investment."  Allen sold about 40 million Microsoft shares,
     but his remaining 145 million put his stake in the company
     at about $16B (BARRON'S, 11/16 issue)....MASTER P made his
     CBA debut with the Ft. Wayne Fury on Saturday and the N.Y.
     TIMES' Mike Allen called him "an aggressive but clumsy
     player" (11/15)....In Denver, Norm Clarke asked if TERRELL
     DAVIS was People magazine's "first choice" for its "sexiest
     men" issue over ELVIS GRBAC.  Davis: "Someone called a
     couple of months ago -- I thought it was People, but I'm not
     sure -- and wanted to do an interview about that.  I told
     them I'd have to postpone it" (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 11/15).
     ...Orioles Owner PETER ANGELOS bought the 237-acre Ross
     Valley Farm, "one of the most visible horse farms" in MD,
     for $2.6M (Baltimore SUN, 11/17)....SHAQUILLE O'NEAL and
     REGIS PHILBIN worked out at a local gym today on "Live with
     Regis and Kathie Lee."  O'Neal bench-pressed Philbin and
     then during a game, raised Philbin above his head to allow
     him to dunk the ball.  During the closing credits, Philbin
     called O'Neal "a very hot rap artist" and said "we love him
     very much" ("Live with Regis and Kathie Lee," 11/17).
