The NY Court of Appeals refused to "consider an appeal
of the Yankee Stadium referendum" to block city funding for
a new Manhattan stadium, according to Frank Lombardi of the
N.Y. DAILY NEWS. The court's decision means that no
referendum on the future of Yankee stadium will be placed on
the November ballot (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/21). Padres Owner
John Moores commented on Yankee Stadium following the first
two World Series games: "That's such a subpar facility that
it's ridiculous. Besides the place being old, the aisles
are just tiny. ... If I were Steinbrenner, there's no way
that I'd stay" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/20).
IN SAN DIEGO: The Qualcomm Stadium grounds crew spread
10,000 gallons of a fertilizer mixed with a vegetable dye
called "Wintergreen" on the field "in an attempt to make it
presentable" for last night's Game Three after Sunday's
Eagles-Chargers game "created massive divots throughout the
outfield." Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner: "They should
have moved the football game. We're playing a world
championship game here. We shouldn't have to put up with
this" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/21). More Steinbrenner: "That
thing is like a cow pasture. ... They should give these
people a new stadium, or move the team (NEWSDAY, 10/21).
Qualcomm Stadium Manager Bill Wilson, on Steinbrenner's
remarks: "He's not taking into consideration how hard my
guys have to work to get this field into condition. Damn
him and the horse he rode in on" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/21).
OPINION: A WALL STREET JOURNAL editorial notes the
proposals for new ballparks for the Padres and Yankees:
"Benefit from publicly funded sports stadiums make at most
modest contributions to development. And voters appear to
understand that 'new stadium' is officialese for 'new
taxes.' ... The Yankees and Padres play tough. But if
you're looking for real hardball, look at how they play with
the taxpayer" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 10/21).
