BROCHU CHALLENGES FELLOW OWNERS TO TAKE ACTION IF NOT HAPPY

Expos President Claude Brochu said other owners of the
club "should put their money where their mouths are and buy
his" 7.6% share in the club if they are unhappy with his
leadership of the team's proposed ballpark, according to
David Johnston of the Montreal GAZETTE. Brochu: "They could
buy me out; it's not any more complicated than that." A
source close to the club's 13-member ownership group said
Brochu's relationship with "two-thirds" of the owners has
become "increasingly strained in recent weeks." The source:
"There's no doubt it's a fairly tense situation at the
moment. You've got a lot of owners who aren't happy with the
way he's reacted to [ballpark committee member] Jean Coutu's
comments [earlier this week]." The source, on Brochu's
handling of the ballpark situation: "Two-thirds of owners
would have preferred a broader public appeal. Claude's
approach was almost elitist" (Montreal GAZETTE, 8/21).
