MA VOTES DOWN SENATE BILL: PATS STADIUM SITES LIKELY IN PLAY

The MA House yesterday declined to adopt a Senate bill
that would help the Patriots build a new stadium in Foxboro,
which was supported by the team and MA Acting Gov. Paul
Cellucci, according to Tina Cassidy of the BOSTON GLOBE.
House members instead passed a bill backed by House Speaker
Thomas Finneran that authorizes the state to spend $57M in
infrastructure and requires the team to pay $200M for a
privately financed stadium. Cassidy reports that team Owner
Robert Kraft had "already rejected the proposal rendering
the legislation moot." The team released a statement saying
that the rejected Senate bill "was the only workable
proposal considered by the Legislature in the current
session" (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/29). In light of the developments
in MA, CT Gov. John Rowland said there "are no particular
plans at this point in time" about a possible new stadium in
that state, but added, "I'd be more than happy to look into
it. Make no mistake, a team like the Patriots would light
this town on fire" (HARTFORD COURANT, 7/29).
