WHAT'S IN A NAME? KAREEM CITES THE ABILITY TO MARKET HIMSELF

Former Lakers C Kareem Abdul-Jabbar appeared on ESPN's
"Up Close," and discussed the injunction he filed against
Dolphins RB Karim Abdul-Jabbar for the right to market his
name: "I was trying to protect my name that I market myself
under in the [U.S.]. I market myself under that name, and I
have copyrighted that name, and his using that infringed on
my copyright." Abdul-Jabbar said the Dolphins' RB "created
confusion in the marketplace. ... People were asking me if I
play football. It got to that point, so there had to be
some way to make a distinction between me and him in public,
and that was something that we had to work out." More
Abdul-Jabbar: "I had to protect my copyright and the
companies I work for" ("Up Close," ESPN, 4/28).
