CAMERA-SHY BORNSTEIN GETS COVER STORY TREATMENT IN USA TODAY

ESPN/ABC Sports President Steve Bornstein is the
subject of USA TODAY's sports cover story written by Michael
Hiestand. Since Bornstein took over ESPN in '90, he has
overseen the launch of ESPN Radio, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, and ESPN
SportsZone, as well as ESPN's investments in overseas TV
nets and the creation of ESPN events. But Bornstein's job
is now "moving far beyond TV" as it launches bars, retail
stores and a magazine. Bornstein, on his day: "About 85% of
my day is spent managing egos. Then 10% goes to handling
ticket requests for sports events. And, I know this doesn't
add up to 100%, but another 10% goes to thinking ahead 10
years -- or more." He called the X Games the "best idea
under his watch." But Hiestand adds that "the hottest
aspect" of Bornstein's job might be int'l expansion.
Bornstein says ESPN's 20 overseas nets now produce about 10%
of ESPN's total revenues but might hit 40-50% in five years.
ESPN is "expected" to announce today its first regional
cable network in Southern CA (USA TODAY, 12/10).
