OAKLEY'S REFLEXOLOGY: TO REVIVE FORTUNES THROUGH FOOTWEAR

As Oakley "seeks to revive its fortunes -- after four
consecutive quarters of declining sales, disappointing
earnings and management upheaval -- it has come up with an
intriguing new business plan: It's going to make a run at
athletic shoes," according to Stacey Kravetz of the WALL
STREET JOURNAL. Oakley said it will manufacture the shoes
domestically in Foothill Ranch, CA, where it makes its
sunglasses, and is "planning to spend" $8M on expanding its
production space but won't reveal what its total investment
will be. Kravetz writes that shoe business experts say
Oakley shoes "may not look as distinctly different as its
sunglasses," but that the company's "innovation may be in
new manufacturing and construction techniques." Oakley,
which has applied for patents and hired a designer, has yet
to give details "other than a target launch date of sometime
next year" (Stacey Kravetz, WALL STREET JOURNAL, 10/16).
