NAMES IN THE NEWS

          DENNIS RODMAN, on KEVIN GARNETT recently turning down a
     contract extension from the T-Wolves: "That young man needs
     to have his (bleeping) head examined" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES,
     8/26)....Lawyers for the Federal Government and former
     Islanders Owner JOHN SPANO have consolidated cases in three
     states against Spano "as a prelude to a possible plea
     bargain."  Spano "apparently has not decided whether to
     plead guilty" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/26)....JOE MONTANA appeared on
     "Late Show" with David Letterman, where he and Letterman
     threw footballs into the back of a NYC garbage truck ("Late
     Show," CBS, 8/25)....MAESTRO HARRELL, the 5-year-old who co-
     starred in a McDonald's commercial with SCOTTIE PIPPEN,
     appeared on the "Tonight Show" with Jay Leno.  Harrell, on
     working with Pippen: "He had great character, but just
     couldn't remember his lines" ("Tonight Show," NBC, 8/25).
