FRANCHISE NOTES

          Fox issued a statement denying a Bloomberg report that
     said that it was "considering hiring" Michael Milken as an
     executive for the Dodgers after News Corp.'s purchase is
     finalized: "Mr. Milken is not involved with the ongoing
     negotiations between Fox Group and the Los Angeles Dodgers. 
     The Fox Group has neither had discussions with, nor is
     considering Mr. Milken for an executive position" (Fox).
     ...In Chicago, Jay Mariotti, on Jerry Reinsdorf: "Reinsdorf
     has become the new American sports pariah.  For five years,
     I've been saying the man has no interest in fans and every
     interest in what's best for Jerry.  Believe me now?"
     (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 8/12).  Reinsdorf was roasted at a
     benefit for Child Abuse Prevention Education at the Chicago
     Hilton.  Reinsdorf, on his recent criticism: "There's no
     question I'm unpopular, and I felt I needed to get away.  So
     I got in my car and I pulled up to a Motel 6.  They turned
     the light off" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 8/12)... On "CNN/SI,"
     Fred Hickman quoted Disney CEO Michael Eisner, on the
     Angels' Tony Phillips, who was arrested Sunday for
     possession of cocaine: "We are not about winning at any
     cost.  There is an ethical and moral compass we expect our
     people to travel" ("CNN/SI," 8/11)....Mets OF Carl Everett
     will miss the first two days of a six-game road trip "to try
     to regain custody of his children," who were placed in a
     foster home on suspicions of child abuse (N.Y. POST, 8/12).
