STADIUM NOTES

          The NC House Wednesday approved a bill that calls for a
     two-county referendum on a 1% restaurant meal tax and a
     $0.50 ticket tax to finance two-thirds of the cost of a
     planned 40,000-seat stadium in the Greensboro area.  The
     referendum will take place in May '98 (Raleigh NEWS &
     OBSERVER, 7/24)....In N.Y., Tara George writes under the
     header "Open Served A Fan Slam," about Wednesday's unveiling
     of the new Arthur Ashe Stadium at the U.S. Tennis Center. 
     George writes that "some loyal season ticket buyers ... are
     furious that they've been booted to the heavens as more
     space is given over to luxury corporate digs down below"
     (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/24).... According to figures released
     Tuesday by the WA Secretary of State's office, the June 17
     Seahawks stadium referendum cost $3,998,284.18, which
     Seahawks Owner Paul Allen agreed to cover.  He has already
     paid $3.15M and was billed the final $851,000 on Monday
     (Tacoma NEWS TRIBUNE, 7/23).
