CART'S MOLSON INDY SETS ATTENDANCE RECORDS

In Toronto, 69,210 attended CART's Molson Indy event on
Sunday, topping the '96 total of 68,183 and setting an event
record. The three-day total for the event was 164,406,
which exceeded last year's 163,019 and also set a record
(Norris McDonald, Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 7/21). Tourism
Toronto spokesperson John Hamilton said the Molson Indy
brings C$15M into the Ontario economy. A '95 study also
concluded that the event's spinoff properties resulted in
another C$28M economic boost (TORONTO STAR, 7/19). Molson
CEO John Barnett has "concentrated" on the company's
involvement in both hockey and motor racing, according to
George Gross of the TORONTO SUN. Barnett: "When Molson and
Carling merged in 1989, we tried to find a higher profile
for Molson in the U.S. with a logical tie-in in Canada.
Hockey and motor racing fit that bill" (TORONTO SUN, 7/20).
