MARKETPLACE ROUND-UP
Published July 11, 1997
Fashion critic Mr. Blackwell reviews MLB uniforms in
today's USA TODAY. Blackwell calls the Pirates' new skull
and crossbones logo "an absolute nightmare," but he does
call their new uniform "clean and contemporary" (USA TODAY,
7/11)....In N.Y., Phil Mushnick appeals to President Clinton
to reprimand companies and teams for marketing athletic
footwear and team colors to street gangs: "It's high time he
stood up and declared war on the sports world's unyielding
promotion of gangwear" (N.Y. POST, 7/11)....In Japan, Asako
Ishibashi writes on the fallout from five of the top 10
Corel WTA Tour players' use of Yonex racquets: "The better
the players perform, the more bonuses Yonex must pay them
... [which] have been hurting Yonex's bottom line, canceling
the impact on racket sales from its players winning." But
Yonex officials said that they will continue the "promotion
tactic" to build brand image and help it sell equipment in
new segments like golf and snowboards (NIKKEI WEEKLY, 7/7).
