SPANO UNVEILS FOUR PLANS FOR NEW ISLANDERS ARENA COMPLEX

Islanders Owner John Spano unveiled four concepts
Friday for a new arena complex on the current site of the
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, according to Ken
Moritsugu of NEWSDAY. Costing $360-460M, the plans produced
by K.C.-based HOK Sports Facilities Group range "from a
mini-downtown with boutiques and second-story apartments to
a Las Vegas-style entertainment complex." Nassau County
Exec Thomas Gulotta: "It is a clear signal that we are one
step closer to reality. We now have serious parties at the
bargaining table." Moritsugu wrote that both sides "agreed
that several tough issues remain to be resolved, including
whether the county and state will help foot the bill."
Spano: "If I don't get this building, as a business person,
I have to make an ugly decision. Is it move the team? Is
it sell the team? Is it do something else? I don't want
that to ever be the case" (NEWSDAY, 6/14).
