In order to get the 49ers stadium ballot measure
approved in June, 49ers Owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. is
"fighting through a host of obstacles, ranging from the
public's general skepticism over pricey stadium deals to a
barrage of publicity about a hedonistic birthday party put
on two weeks ago for the campaign's top consultant,"
according to Gary Delsohn of the SACRAMENTO BEE. Team
President Carmen Policy said that the 49ers are "finally
starting to get out their message," and that the party for
consultant Jack Davis "may have helped." Policy: "That
really put a fire under everybody." Delsohn noted that the
campaign "seems to be enjoying a boost now that stars like
[49ers QB Steve] Young and [49ers WR Jerry] Rice are making
appearances around town." The BEE's Delshon adds that "big
questions remain about the financing," as the team "can't
even say" how much ticket prices will rise, and officials
last week were "scrambling to find ways to convince the
public none of the city's general fund would be tapped to
make the deal work" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 5/18).
