NBC DEFENDS STAYING WITH ROCKETS-SONICS IN OT IN CHICAGO

In Chicago, NBC Sports' decision to stay with the
Rockets-Sonics overtime game on Sunday on WMAQ -- thereby
missing "nearly all" of the first quarter of Bulls-Hawks --
"prompted protest calls to the station," according to
Michael Hirsley of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. NBC Sports
President Dick Ebersol: "Our philosophy for years has been
if fans have invested so much time in an exciting,
compelling game, we'll stay with that game." Ebersol, on
using a split-screen to show both games: "Split-screen is a
coward's way out" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 5/12).
RANGERS-FLY ON ESPN? In N.Y., Steve Zipay notes that
Game One of the Rangers-Flyers Eastern Conference Finals is
due to air on ESPN2, available in only about 330,000 homes
on Long Island and on one package in Cablevision's Bronx and
Brooklyn systems. ESPN's Josh Krulewitz said the network is
"working on a plan" to show Friday' game on ESPN in the New
York and Philadelphia markets. ESPN had committed to a
