PHILADELPHIA PROPOSAL MIGHT BE STADIUM OF THE FUTURE

The Phillies and Eagles confirmed yesterday that they
are considering a plan for a new stadium "that could change
the look of American sports venues everywhere," according to
Edward Moran in the PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS. Based on
technologies developed for a Tokyo stadium, real estate
developer Ronald Rubin is proposing a facility that "circles
back" to the '70s model of multipurpose stadiums. The
design involves moveable walls and retractable seats that
"could provide" a 65,000-seat football stadium or an
"intimate" 45,000-seat ballpark and alter sightlines in the
process. Both teams have met individually with Rubin to
discuss the idea. Phillies President Bill Giles: "We are
willing to explore every option that might come forward.
However, we believe a baseball-only, grass stadium will do a
lot more for tourism" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 4/11).
