STADIUM NOTES

In an SI "Point After" column entitled "Crash But No
Smash," Ed Hinton writes the new Texas Motor Speedway "lacks
one essential element: a race track that even approaches the
standard set by the luxury boxes. ... Truth is, in NASCAR's
rush uptown -- an abandonment of its backwoods roots for the
big markets -- the essence of the sport is disappearing at
breakneck speed" (SI, 4/14 issue)....In a Tuesday proposal
to Denver officials, the Broncos said that they need a
stadium with 12,000 luxury seats in place of less expensive
seats, which "are now held by longtime season-ticket
owners," and 100 to 135 suites, compared to the 60 at Mile
High Stadium (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 4/9)....Penske
Motorsports won an option to buy a majority share of
Rockingham-based North Carolina Motor Speedway with an offer
     of $18.61 a share (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 4/10).
