HUIZENGA'S TAX-BREAK BILL GETS OK FROM SENATE COMMITTEE

A FL bill to give a $60M tax break to Wayne Huizenga to
make football-related improvements to Pro Player Stadium was
approved by the Senate Commerce Committee, according to
Diane Hirth of the Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL. The bill
passed 11-5 and "working in Huizenga's favor was the fact
that every other major sports franchise in Florida has been
given the benefit of this sales tax rebate, worth up to $2
million a year for 30 years." The bill still needs to be
approved by two more Senate committees. A House bill has
"yet to get a hearing" (Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL, 3/18).
In Miami, Steve Bousquet notes "to quiet skepticism,
Huizenga lobbyists wrote an amendment that senators included
Monday in which the Dolphins owner agrees to hire ex-welfare
recipients for stadium jobs." If the bill becomes law,
Huizenga would be the only FL team owner to "snare" two
separate $60M tax breaks for the same stadium. Lawmakers
"earlier" gave Huizenga a $60M rebate to "retrofit" then-Joe
Robbie Stadium for baseball (MIAMI HERALD, 3/18).
