A KINDER, GENTLER REDS BOSS: JOHN ALLEN PROFILED ON CNN/SI

Reds Managing Executive Officer John Allen was profiled
in a "Page 1" report by CNN/SI's Paul Crane. With Reds
Owner Marge Schott serving a two-and-a-half-year suspension
from the club's daily operations, Allen was approved by MLB
to run the Reds in June and his original 60-day, interim
running of the team has been extended through '98. CNN/SI's
Crane: "[Allen's] first task upon assuming command of the
Reds was to win back the players. His next task was to win
back the fans." Allen: "The message again was, 'I'm not
going to be a puppet, things are going to change and we want
the fans back.'" Schott's suspension is scheduled to end
after the '98 season, and Crane notes Allen's future "very
much depends on Marge Schott's." Allen: "I'm sure that she
feels that I've betrayed her a little bit or that she can't
trust me. But what everybody has to remember is that in all
cases I try and perform in the best interests of the ...
Reds and the fans of the Cincinnati Reds" (CNN, 2/27).
