The NHL's Executive Committee of the Board of Governors
will meet soon to reduce the list of applicants for an NHL
expansion team, according to Neil Hohlfeld of the HOUSTON
CHRONICLE. Hohlfeld: "If logic holds, Atlanta, Houston and
Nashville, TN should rank 1-2-3," with Columbus, OH;
Minneapolis-St. Paul and "perhaps" Raleigh-Durham, NC,
"rounding out the field of possible expansion sites."
Hohlfeld adds that "there is speculation that the NHL
remains concerned about the arena situation in Houston, but
the lure of the 11th-largest TV market in the nation is too
strong" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 2/11)....The AVP has expanded
its relationship with Tele-charge. Consumers can buy
tickets to the AVP's 19 events and the tournaments will have
standardized stadium layouts and ticket pricing for
continuity from event-to-event (AVP)....SI's "Scorecard"
notes the Millrose Games, with Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Gail
Devers not competing over a "misunderstanding" on appearance
fees. Although event organizers raised $15,000 for both
athletes, their manager, Bob Kersee, refused the payment,
adding his clients had "been promised significantly more."
"Scorecard" writes that Joyner-Kersee "has served the sport
selflessly for years, and she is one of its few marquee
athletes. ... [but] it's time to make rebuilding track and
field the principle that matters most" (SI, 2/17 issue).
