PUBLIC REACTION TO TAX PROPOSALS FOR NEW PACERS ARENA

Results from a Indianapolis-commissioned survey reveal
there "isn't overwhelming support for some of the tax
proposals being considered" for a new Pacers arena,
according to Gerry Lanosga of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS.
Mayor Stephen Goldsmith views the poll as "problematic" in
that "a high percentage of the public wants the Pacers and
Colts kept in town and a high percentage of the public's
unwilling to pay to do it." The poll had 1,536 respondents
from an eight-county central Indiana region and surveyed
them on four tax proposals. Polling consultant Mark
Rosentraub: "While both the Indiana Pacers and Indianapolis
Colts receive substantial credit for enhancing
Indianapolis's national reputation, image and the quality of
life, on balance, no tax proposal to help improve their
     financial position received overwhelming support"
     (INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS, 2/10).
