The Tigers plan to use the $.90 surcharge fans pay on
baseball tickets to cover the $2M they promised to give the
city to tear down their current stadium, according to Tina
Lam of the DETROIT FREE PRESS. Meanwhile, the Tigers filed a
new lease agreement with the state's Renaissance Fund, which
is providing $30M for the stadium project. The lease lasts
35 years, with possible extensions. Highlights of the deal
include: An option to put a dome on the ballpark. The Tigers
will receive all parking revenue at the baseball-football
site. However, they will pay an unspecified amount of the
revenue to cover bonds to buy land for parking on the west
side of Woodward St. The team will pay $20M, out of its
$145M share of the project, for the parking rights. The
Lions will not share in parking, but they will receive all
concessions and ad revenues from football games and other
events held inside their dome. Stadium Authority Co-Chair
Mike Duggan said he expects both the Lions and the Tigers to
break ground this spring (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 1/22).
