DESPITE HIS FALL, TYSON HELPS PPV CLIMB TO NEW HEIGHTS

Showtime Networks Inc.'s annual pay-per-view survey
reported that PPV revenues are expected to total $621M this
year, with event coverage grossing $320M of that, according
to Kim Mitchell of CABLE WORLD. The $320M represents an
increase of about 48%, "thanks in large part to Mike Tyson."
At an average price of $50, SNI estimates that the cable
industry lost a "staggering" $12M in revenues due to signal
piracy during the November 9 Tyson-Evander Holyfield fight.
The survey also showed that Tyson attracted more new event
buyers and first-time PPV buyers than any other fighter.
Showtime Entertainment Television predicts that event
revenue will climb 17% in '97 (CABLE WORLD, 12/9 issue).
