DESPITE DOUBTERS, HAMILTON NHL BID STILL ON AFTER MEETING

North York, Ontario Councillor George Mammoliti says
Hamilton chances of winning an NHL expansion franchise are
"better than ever" after a meeting with NHL Senior VP Jeffrey
Pash yesterday, according to Robert Benzie of the TORONTO SUN.
Mammoliti: "The impression I'm getting is that they're going to
look at us seriously and now I'm going to go back to the
potential owners and tell them to write out a cheque" (TORONTO
SUN, 10/30). NHL Oilers VP Glen Sather, on Hamilton's potential
bid: "No chance. All they're doing is throwing a hundred grand
[expansion fee] away" (Steve Milton, HAMILTON SPECTATOR, 10/30).
Maple Leafs Dir/Business Operations & Communications Bob Stellick
calls the potential bid "extremely surprising," citing the Leafs
"exclusive territory" (Robert Benzie, TORONTO SUN, 10/29).
CFL NEWS & NOTES: The Argonauts are expected to lose about
C$6M in '96 (Marty York, Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 10/30)....Lions
President Mike McCarthy said a report which leaked the name of
David Braley as the club's new owner has placed the deal in
"jeopardy." McCarthy: "Some people have just blown a great
opportunity for the B.C. Lions to get out of the debt of the CFL.
What could have gone well has gone sour" (Mike Ganter, TORONTO
SUN, 10/30).
