NAMES IN THE NEWS

     The IRS has filed a claim for up to $278M in back taxes
against Rockies co-Owner OREN BENTON.  Benton claims the "actual
amount in dispute" is $100M (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS,
10/23)....Speedway Motorsports CEO BRUTON SMITH is profiled in
FORBES.   Smith, 70, has been promoting stock car races since the
1950's, adding, "I can remember when people thought this was a
redneck sport.  Now we sell tickets to the plant worker and the
owner of the plant, too" (FORBES, 11/4)....JACKIE JOYNER-KERSEE
will become the new Chair of the St. Louis Sports Commission (ST.
LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 10/24)....GABRIELA SABATINI will announce
her retirement at a press conference in New York today (Mult.,
10/24).
