BUCKS SEE BACKING THE WOMEN IS SMARTER: IS WNBA IN THE FOLD?

The Bucks are interested in becoming one of eight NBA teams
granted a WNBA franchise when teams are assigned by the league
October 30, according to Tom Flaherty of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL
SENTINEL. However, an unnamed NBA source tells Flaherty that
Milwaukee is not a "strong candidate for two reasons: The Bucks
do not control their own facility, coupled with the small size of
the Milwaukee radio and television market." Bucks Dir of
Publicity Bill King: "I think they're going to tell us whether
they're interested, frankly. I don't think it's the other way
around." League spokesperson Peter Land revealed that
"approximately" 16 NBA franchises are seeking WNBA teams. He
declined to comment on the criteria being used to select the
clubs, except to note that, "It's safe to say the national
television is the most important thing for the league." Land:
"The WNBA's television picture right now is predominantly
national, not local" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 9/20).
