WILL PGA TOUR'S FINCHEM FLINCH IN WAKE OF NORMAN CRITICISM?

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem's announcement last week
of the formation of a federation that will sanction three world
championship events, is examined by SI's Tim Rosaforte in "Golf
Plus." A similar idea, backed by Greg Norman in '94, was
underwritten by what Norman claimed to be a $112M TV contract
with Fox. Norman now says that Finchem "not only co-opted his
idea" for a World Tour, but also "cashed in on the Fox network's
interest in golf." With News Corp.'s $50M investment in The Golf
Channel and PGA Tour TV deals expiring in '98, Norman suspects
Finchem "is creating new golf programming for Fox" (SI, 9/23
issue).
