LOOKING BEYOND ATLANTA: BAY AREA, TEXAS TO BATTLE FOR 2008?

Former U.S. Drug Czar Lee Brown, also a former Houston
police chief and leader of the efforts to bring the Olympics to
Houston in 2008 or 2012, said he favors a "Texas Olympics" with
Houston as the lead city. Also, Carl Lewis, an adopted
Houstonian, plans to get involved in Houston's possible bid after
Atlanta (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 7/17). San Francisco Mayor Willie
Brown also has plans to bid for the 2008 Games by using a
regional approach. Brown claims they still have $75,000 in a bid
fund after a failed run for '88. One USOC spokesperson said they
would be "pleased" if San Francisco joined the bidding for 2008.
Other U.S. cities said to be interested: Cincinnati, New York,
Seattle, Chicago and Boston (Scott Ostler, S.F. CHRONICLE, 7/17).
