OLYMPIC NEWS AND NOTES

     Atlanta's $60M Centennial Olympic Park was created from $25M
in private donations, $15M from ACOG and the sale of engraved
bricks, $10M from the Atlanta business community, $7M in in-kind
donations, and $2.5M from the state of GA (USA TODAY, 7/10)....VP
Al Gore said fans in Atlanta should "relax and have fun" and not
to worry about security risks.  Gore: "Every possible precaution
has been taken" (WASHINGTON POST, 7/9)....Despite planning for
"an army" of 110,000 volunteers, ACOG currently has 41,000 with
just over a week until the Games.  Initial interest "faded" as
some say organizers made getting free help "more difficult than
it had to be" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/9)....Olympic archer Judi
Adams is profiled in the WALL STREET JOURNAL.  Roger Thurow notes
J.C. Penney is providing the team with shirts and shorts (WALL
STREET JOURNAL, 7/10)....During the Games, athletes, coaches,
trainers and officials will be provided with 2.7 million 20-ounce
bottles and 11.5-ounce cans of PowerAde.  This includes 4.1
million ounces for athletes and 1.5 million free servings to fans
(PowerAde)....Hamilton, Ontario-based Royal Recycling Ltd. is
profiled in the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL as the Official Recycler of
the Atlanta Games.  The company plans to pick up 13 million cans,
25 million plastic bottles and five million polyethylene
containers, as well as 150 million printed sheets of paper
(Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 7/10)....U.S. Decathlete Dan O'Brien was
interviewed on NBC's "Today" this morning (NBC, 7/10).
