CFL COMMISSIONER THREATENS RESIGNATION WITHOUT NEW CONTRACT

According to league and team sources, CFL Commissioner Larry
Smith has said he may resign within the next two years if he does
not get a new, long-term contract. The Toronto GLOBE & MAIL's
Marty York reports Smith wants a new deal for three more years at
about C$400,000 per. Smith: "We have not formally discussed
money yet. But, yes, I've expressed to the league a potential
interest in continuing on if they have an interest in me, and
I've asked them to let me know early so that, if they're not
interested, I can get myself organized and get back into
business." One source: "The problem is, we're not all sure
whether we want to keep him around or not" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL,
6/22).
