LONG ISLAND COULD BE SOON PART OF IBL'S MAP

The proposed Int'l Basketball League, which organizers
announced just this week, is looking to put a team on Long Island
and have had discussions with Nassau Coliseum GM Lance Elder,
according to NEWSDAY. Elder said negotiations could be concluded
as early as today. Paul Martha, head of the IBL's management
team, said talks have been "good" and that the league "can't
ignore Long Island as a market." The last pro basketball team to
play at Nassau Coliseum was the Nets. Martha said the league
will become a home for "kids that wouldn't be comfortable in the
NBA or Division I basketball. If the best players we can find
are 18 or 19, then we're going to have a young league. ... There
are buildings in need of teams" (Joe Schad, NEWSDAY, 6/19).
