Three key CBC unions have set midnight next Thursday for the
beginning of a general strike at the network. The unions
rejected a membership vote on management's "last, best offer"
(Vancouver PROVINCE, 5/16)....In Washington, Andrew Beyer joins
the criticism of ABC's coverage of the Kentucky Derby. From a
horseplayer's perspective, he writes there were too many "fast
cuts and artsy shots" (WASHINGTON POST, 5/16)....TCI Chair John
Malone said he is open to changing his company's position on the
Turner-Time Warner merger if it will help the deal get federal
regulatory approval (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 5/16). Malone, on
regulators' concerns: "The idea that I'm going to protect CNN
because I own 8.7% of Time Warner -- no way. ... It's brain-
damaged" (USA TODAY, 5/16).... Revenue at Liberty Media for the
three months ended March 31 was $448M, a 25% increase from the
same period in '95. Liberty Sports' operating cash flow was $3M
for the first quarter of '96, an improvement over a negative $7M
in '95 (Liberty Media)....The WB Network will begin programming
Mondays next fall (MEDIAWEEK, 5/13 issue). ....The most exciting
auto racing finish of the week will be highlighted as "The
Rogaine Hair-Raising Finish of the Week" as part of TNN's racing
coverage (GOULD MEDIA, 5/16).... Ratings for Saturday's pole
qualifying at the U.S. and Indy 500's were identical -- a 0.7
(DETROIT NEWS, 5/16).
