DISNEY SELLS OFF L.A.'S KCAL; TEAMS EXPECTED TO STAY

Young Broadcasting Inc. paid a "hefty" $368M for Disney's
KCAL-TV in L.A., a move that, according to the WALL STREET
JOURNAL, "propels the New York-based company into the big leagues
of broadcasting." Disney was required to sell KCAL as part of
the merger with Cap Cities/ABC. The sale will allow Disney to
keep an indirect stake in KCAL, as ABC holds 14% of nonvoting
stock in Young Broadcasting. The station has the rights to the
Lakers, Angels and Mighty Ducks (John Lippman, WALL STREET
JOURNAL, 5/14). The station's format -- heavy emphasis on local
news and sports -- is not expected to change. KCAL VP of Media
Marketing Stacy Okonowsky said the sports deals are long-term
"and are expected to remain intact" (Karen Kaplan, L.A. TIMES,
5/14).
