MEDIA NOTES

     San Francisco's two major daily papers -- the Heart-owned
Examiner and the Chronicle -- are close to an agreement to shut
down the Examiner and run a jointly owned operation (SAN JOSE
MERCURY NEWS, 4/27)....Fox and Liberty Media are "hashing out
plans" for revamping Liberty's sports channels by August 31 and
possibly gaining control of three more channels Liberty co-owns.
According to INSIDE MEDIA, the plans still call for placing "Fox
Sports" on all Liberty-owned RSNs, as well as on the Prime
Network.  In addition, sources said all the regional programming,
advertising, promotion, marketing, etc. could be centralized
under the Fox-Liberty umbrella in L.A. or New York (INSIDE MEDIA
4/28 issue)....In Baltimore, Vito Stellino notes that NFL fans in
several major markets may be prevented from seeing the Cowboys-
49ers in November.  Chicago, Washington and Baltimore are among
the markets Fox will lose (Baltimore SUN, 4/28)....USA TODAY's
Michael Hiestand notes sponsor Chrysler "had to be most
appreciative" that Mark O'Meara, winner of the Greater Greensboro
Chrysler Classic, did not wear his "Toyota" cap while accepting
the winner's check on Sunday (USA TODAY, 4/29)....TBS Chair Ted
Turner expects CNN en Espanol to be in every Latin American
country by the time the network begins airing in the first
quarter of '97.  Distribution in the U.S. is expected later
(MIAMI HERALD, 4/28)....CNN will soon supply "up-to-the-minute
headlines" on pagers and telephones, according to President Tom
Johnson (USA TODAY, 4/29)....Danny Villanueva, GM of the MLS L.A.
Galaxy, expects a local TV deal soon for the remaining seven road
games not already shown on Univision or ESPN.  KCAL is said to be
in talks with the team (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 4/25).
