ARRRRRGH! ISLES MUST KEEP FISHERMAN LOGO UNTIL '97- 98

The NHL has denied a request by the Islanders to change its
fisherman logo and jersey design back to the team's original "NY"
look for '96-97. The refusal is a result of the Isles missing
the October 15 deadline for such changes. NHL Enterprises
President Rick Dudley: "The NHL supports the Islanders to the
fullest extent in their efforts to modify their uniform.
However, our deadlines are designed to protect not only the fans,
who have supported the current design, but also the businesses of
our retailers and licensees" (NHL). To commemorate their 25th
anniversary, the Isles will be permitted to wear the original
logo with its updated colors as a "third jersey" for
approximately 15 games. The fisherman logo will become
"officially extinct" in '97-98 (Jason Diamos, N.Y. TIMES, 4/13).
Meanwhile, Islanders CEO Bob Rosenthal confirmed that he and his
management consortium had invested an additional $5M in the club.
Silent majority owner John Pickett still owns nearly 90% of the
team (Peter Botte, N.Y. POST, 4/13).
